Apartment Living

Are you ready for a rant? Ugh! Apartment living can be so frustrating at times. This weekend...all I wanted was a quiet, lazy, stay in my jammies and watch bad tv while stitching type of weekend.

When I want quiet...I *really* want quiet. But my neighbors weren't cooperating.

Saturday was the guy across the hall blaring Joan Jett around 8pm. Like BLARING!!! There is an apartment between us and I could hear the lyrics perfectly! I feel bad for the girl who lives between us. How can she deal?! I'd be having a nervous breakdown! Dude, turn down the music! Now, I love Joan Jett but I don't appreciate being forced to listen to her when I want to watch Criminal Minds and actually listen to the tv show. At least he has the sense to turn the music off at 10pm.

Now the people below me are the worst. They've been bad since I moved in and I complained about them three years ago. They are almost as inconsiderate as the college girls I lived above at my old place. I'd be more forgiving if they were college aged instead of the married 30=40 something married couple that they actually are. They've been playing two-beat bassy music all weekend. You know, the kind of music that is migraine-inducing. As I shuffled off to bed at 2am (yes, very late), they proceeded to head to the bedroom as well and have a loud argument/discussion which made me bang on the floor a few times and then resort to earplugs. Living here, I am completely dependant on earplugs because 1. they are loud, irritating night owls and 2. the dude snores so loud you can probably hear him on the East Coast! They drive me insane. In the 4 years I've lived here, I've never said anything to them since this is a consequence of apartment living but today, I had it! The loud music at 330pm was driving me insane. I couldn't escape it. Every room...bassy music. My head was starting to hurt. I wrote them a note, slipped it under their door, came upstairs, hopped into the shower and when I came out...silence. It was beautiful! They'll probably be loud and annoying tomorrow but I'm glad I "said" something. I'm way too shy to knock on their door and tell them off but oh, how I want to! I'd like to give the dude a brochure for a sleep clinic because seriously....can you hear him over there? He is fricking loud! He'll wake me up in the middle of the night and I'm not even in the same room!

My neighbors drive me insane! I love my apartment though. It's beautiful and when my neighbors aren't driving me batty by being loud, it's seriously my sanctuary. Arches, french doors, hardwood floors, high ceilings, loads of closet space...it's beautiful. But I sometimes daydream about moving to a little cottage or duplex to minimize the number of neighbors and hence noise but that would cost me at least $400 a month more than my rent now and well, that's a lot. So...I guess for now...I'll buy stock in earplugs and Excedrine Migraine. It's cheaper.

Fricking neighbors!!

Stitching has been successful though. I finished Christmas Tea and organized my meager collection of DMC. I also got some lovely christmas surprises in the mail and even got complimented on my obnoxious glitter red nail polish. So it was not a loss! It's late, dark and rainy tonight and I won't even try to take pictures. I'll save them for next time.

I'm off to try my hand at a couple christmas ornies for last minute presents. Better go make my fabric selection!

Until next time...

Wow! I can't believe that they are so inconsiderate. Maybe they'll be quieter after your note, if not you really should mention something to the landlord. I don't mind loud music now and then but there is a time and a place for it.

I lived in an apartment like that many years ago, the people next to me had 3 kids that they were constantly yelling at, and the guy and his wife downstairs used to play the music so loud it made the windows rattle, but no one wanted to say anything to them because dude was a total gang banger and everyone including me was scared of him. They finally thankfully kicked him out though, then I moved to the most wonderful apartment that you could hear a pin drop, it was wonderful. I feel for you.

Ah the joys of apartment living. Who are these people?! Everyone who has lived in an apartment has at least one loud neighbor story. Are we ever that loud neighbor? I'd like to think that I wasn't but I'm not so sure.

I did live ground floor so at least no one had to listen to me stomping around.

Oh wow! It sounds like a college dorm instead of an apartment! I have to admit though I was lucky and didn't live in many apartments so I may have escaped lightly. I sure hope those neighbors tone it down now that you've slipped them a note. Geez! And that Joan Jett guy -- where do these people come from? Have a great week!

I feel your pain. Years ago I lived in an apartment and had a downstairs neighbor who skateboarded all night in his apartment. I went down there once to complain and discovered he had no furniture, no rugs, nothing. He said he had just gotten divorced and watched TV and rolled around on his skateboard at night. He apologized and said he would only do it during the day from then on. Sometimes it does pay to say something.

I remember those days of apartment living. Your rant makes me appreciate my house so much. Although, the things I could rant about my freakin' next-door neighbors!

I totally feel for you being an apartment dweller with neighbors from hell myself. LOL We should trade rants sometime. LOL

I am glad you made some progress on your stitching though!

Good for you! Also being an apartment dweller, I feel your pain. My "problem" neighbors are gone. I had to call the police on them a couple of times last year due to domestic violence issues. :( Thankfully, she finally wised up and left him, and they both moved out. Ironically, there is now a cop living in the apartment. LOL

The worse I have to deal with now are the people below me who have a fairly new baby. I occasionally hear crying for the middle of the night feeding, but that probably won't last much longer now.

Oh I so completely understand. I had downstairs neighbors once who for months were hammering and sawing every single night from 8-midnight. Finally we saw why -- they had put up a ceiling lattice of about 1' squares all across the really large living-dining area of the apt and and had then affixed hundreds of strings of Christmas tree lights to the lattice. It looked cool, but not for the construction period!

Oh and then there were the guys in the same building who lived directly above it who used their back door to the communal stairway to put their trash bags out, but they never took them to the trash. then they got maggots and flies so they took out the months and months of trash and hosed down the stairs... you see it coming right--- hosed down the stairs under our kitchen door ---- water, maggots, fly pupae. We had hundreds and hundreds of flies for over a month thank you to those "thoughtful" neighbors.

I don't know if you read my blog when I had "As The Grass Grows" saga going on with my neighbors when I lived in a duplex. I'm here to say it doesn't get any easier with just living next door to one other neighbor. The 5:30AM arguments between Mom & Daughter were so much fun.
